Norwegian distribution: The species is known from a few localities in the most continental part of the upper valley of southeastern Norway - Counties:: Op. - Vegetation regions: Southern boreal. - Altitude: 450 - 750 m

World distribution: Buellia asterella is known from Norway, Great Britain, France, Germany and Switzerland

Ecology: In Norway, it grows on calciferous soil or in soil-filled fissures of schistose rock, in open, sun-exposed, south- to west-facing slopes

Threats: Terricolous specimens are possibly threatened by trampling by sheep and cattle

Status: There are only a few specimens at the known localities. The exact position of some collections are difficult to interpret; it is possibly only collected at two sites: The outcrops below Ulvsbu and the slope above Viste. Both sites are protected (Sandehorten Nature Reserve and Vistehorten Nature Reserve)
