World distribution: Buellia elegans is known from the central European Alps, Afghanistan, Colorado and Alaska.
Ecology: The Norwegian material grew on soil in fissures in calciferous schist, on a large, vertical, southwest facing, sun-exposed rock wall in a steep canyon
Threats: No threats known
Status: Very rare at a single locality
Notes: The Norwegian specimen is sterile, and the determination somewhat tentative.
