Norwegian distribution: The species is known from rather few localities in the continental part of the upper valley of southeastern Norway - Counties:: Op. - Vegetation regions: Southern boreal to low alpine. - Altitude: 365 - c. 1150 m

World distribution: Buellia epigaea is widely distributed in Europe, and also occurs in Asia (Turkey) and North America (Colorado, Utah). In Europe it is known from Norway, Sweden (Gottland and Södermanland), Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France and Spain

Ecology: In Norway, it grows on calciferous soil or in soil-filled fissures of schistose rock, in open, sun-exposed, south- to west-facing slopes

Threats: Terricolous specimens are possibly threatened by trampling by sheep and cattle

Status: This rare species occurs scattered at a rather small number of localities
