World distribution: The species is known from scattered localities in arid areas in Europe (Norway and Austria), Asia (Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tadzhikistan, Kirghizia, Gornyi Altai, Yakutia, Mongolia, and Gansu) and North America (Colorado and Utah)

Ecology: In Norway, the species grows on calciferous schist on steep to overhanging, south-facing rock walls. The sites are exposed, being in mountainsides above birch forests or screes. Both sites are in distinctly continental areas with a low annual precipiation (400-500 and 500-700 mm)

Threats: No threats identified

Status: It is very rare at both sites; the known population consists of only a few square centimeters

Notes: The species is rather inconspicuous. It occurs at the base of more or less inaccessible mountainsides, and the two known populations may be larger than known.
