Norwegian distribution: The species is known from rather few localities in the continental part of the upper valley of southeastern Norway
- Counties:: Op. - Vegetation regions: Southern boreal to low alpine. - Altitude: 240 - 1050 m
World distribution: Toninia tristis is distributed throughout the northern hemisphere, occurring mainly in dry areas, and is even known from South America. Subspecies tristis occurs in Norway, the central European mountains, and Colorado.
Ecology: In Norway, Toninia tristis grows in soil-filled fissures of calcareous schist and on calciferous soil. The sites are open, sun-exposed, south- to west-facing slopes or rock outcrops.
Threats: No threats known
Status: A rare species, but rather common at some sites.
Notes: There are nine subspecies recognized; they differ in some anatomical characters (pigments in the apothecium, spore size and septation) which are correlated with chemical features, distribution and ecology..
