    Keywords: PERTUSARIA HYMENEA/ CHEMISTRY
Abstract: Seventy-seven specimens of some species of the genus Pertusaria have been studied by chromatographic and partly also mass spectrometric analyses. P. cyparissi, P. hymenea, P. lecanorodes, P. flavicans, P. flavida, P. rupicola and probably also P. ficorum and P. maximiliana contain the xanthone flavicanon, that causes the yellow colour of the thalli; in P. flavicans, P. rupicola and partly P. flavida and probably also P. ficorum and P. maximiliana the occurrence of the depsidone stictic acid has been shown additionally. The mentioned species are restricted to the mediterranean area respectively have extended from there to Western and Central Europe, the sorediate ones widest to the north-east respectively to the alpine zone. It is discussed, whether in spite of their differences in the structure of the apothecial verrucae, these species represent a systematic unit. The substances may be used partly to characterize the species. P. coronata is distinguished chemically from P. coccodes, to which it is placed recently, by an unidentified substance orange fluorescing in ultra-violet light, and further by stictic acid instead of norstictic acid. Both the species are not related to P. hymenea. The distribution of the species of the P. hymenea group in Europe has been mapped out roughly. 1 pl. 2 tab. [8 species.]

Abstract: Fifty-two specimens of 8 species of the genus Buellia which contain xanthones have been studied by means of lichen mass spectrometry, thin layer chromatography, paper chromatography and partly chromatogram spectral photometry. The chemical composition of B. concinna, B. geophila, B. vernicoma has been studied for the first time. In all specimens several related xanthones have been found which differ in degree of O-methylation and chlorination respectively; in most cases the xanthones with three Cl substitutes are the main compounds. - For the main compound of B. granulosa (of the 6-O-methyltrichlornorlichexanthone type) the name granulosin is proposed. The taxonomical significance of the detected xanthones has been discussed. The species B. anisomera and B. granulosa - which show transitory forms - are distinctly separated by means of different xanthones.

The production of pannarin by the isolated mycobionts reported in the present study, however, unequivocally confirms Komyia and Shibata's hypothesis that typical lichen depsidones can indeed be synthesized by isolated lichen fungi with no assistance from the alga."]

Abstract: Three chemotypes are known for Lepraria eburnea J.R.Laundon: (1): alectorialic acid and protocetraric acid; (2) alectorialic acid and psoromic acid; and (3) alectorialic acid (formerly referred to "L. frigida"). Only chemotypes (1) and (3) were represented in the present study. Most specimens studies are from Central Europe and belong to chemotype (1); the only Australian specimen studied also belongs here. Chemotype (3) is represented by a few collections from the U.S.A., Greenland, Svalbard and Austria. Chemical analyses were performed with thin-layer chromatography and mass spectrometry. In both chemotypes, alectorialic acid was found to be accompanied by variable amounts of barbatolic acid (previously unknown in chemotype 3), 5,7-dihydroxy-6-methylphthalide (± trace) and 5,7-dihydroxy-6-formylphthalide (± trace, tentative identification only). The concentration of protocetraric acid in chemotype (1) is variable. The ecology of L. eburnea is also described.
