- To provide positive feedback to key authors. Positive comments encourage updates to keys and encourage others to write keys of their own.
- To advise other users of the benefits or short-comings of a key. Any shortcomings should be fairly and objectively noted in a professional manner; aggressive, insulting, or adversarial comments will not be allowed.
- Quality control. This will be achieved by allowing users to note the shortcomings of a key. The intent is not to discourage people from depositing reasonable keys, but to allow evaluation of the keys deposited so that inexperienced lichen identifiers may have some way to evaluate the key. This also is similar to 'peer-review'. Though much less rigorous, it has the potential to improve keys over several versions, making them more reasonable for citation in scientific papers.
All comments are reviewed by the currator before they are posted in the archive. While comments notifying users of the shortcomings of a key are accepted, NEGATIVE CRITICISM OR FLAMING WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED! Constructive criticism should be sent directly to the key author rather than posted in the archive. Authors may comment on their own keys to point out errors noticed after depositing the key or for other reasons.
Try to keep the mood positive, but don't avoid reasonable comments.
