Distribution and management of Ledum palustre in Østfold county, S.E. Norway

Ledum palustre is a peatland species with an eastern continental distribution in Europe, with parts of its western distribution limit in S.E. Norway. About 40 locatities are situated in Østfold county (4.200 km2). The distribution of Ledum from east to west in Østfold shows a preference towards the eastern districts of the county. The species' distribution mainly reflect the distribution of the peatland areas, increasing by height above sea level. The species has a local conservation value in the county. The number of localities is declining. The species' vitality is apparently decreasing. Only 3 localities are situated within nature reserves. At least 3 other localities, having a historical reference value, a large population as well as the most western locality, need special protection and management. The pine bog areas and the Ledum localities are threatened by drainage caused by forestry, and some instances from peatcutting.
