Marsh Helleborine, Epipactis palustris, in Norway.

A survey of the Marsh Helleborine Epipactis palustris (L.) Crantz., including information on the species' ecology in Norway, is presented. Since the first record in 1769, it has been discovered at 44 sites. 22 of these localities seem to have been either destroyed, or else the plant has disappeared completely. The plant is helophilous and basiphilous, but has a wide ecological range. The main sites in Norway are small calcareous mires, a habitat type which is rapidly disappearing due to drainage and cultivation. Of the 22 localities where the species is still present, eight are drained. Drainage causes a drastic reduction in the number of shoots, but the plant survives for many years due to persistent rooting-shoots. Cessation of draining of mires, filling in old ditches and clearing of dense bushes, seem to be effective measures for saving this orchid.
