Traditional use of Allium schoenoprasum ssp. sibiricum in North Norway.

Siberian chives Allium schoenoprasum ssp. sibiricum is frequent in Finnmark, mainly in the coastal areas, extending southwards along the coast to Troms and a single station in Nordland. The leaves have been commonly collected and used in fish and meat dishes. They were salted and stored in wooden barrels during the winter, in later years also frozen. The plant was also used for medical purposes. It is eagerly eaten by cows, whose milk and meat get the characteristic smell and taste of onion.
