Abstract

Piirainen, M., Alm, T. & Often, A. 1998. Storsyre Rumex thyrsiflorus Fingerh. Blyttia 56: 166-173.
Rumex thyrsiflorus - the first records in Finnmark, with some comments on ssp. haematinus.

Rumex thyrsiflorus is reported from three stations in the Pasvikdalen (Holmfossen, Nyrud) and Jarfjord (Tårnet) areas of Sør-Varanger, Finnmark. These are the first records in North Norway, adjoining a spontaneous area further east on the Kola peninsula, and some anthropochorous stations on the Russian side of the Pasvik valley, in the Pechenga area. The species has previously been found twice in the Pechenga/Lapponia petsamoënsis district, in Liinahamari (1947) and Nikel (1955); six new stations are reported by us.
In Sør-Varanger, the species was probably introduced during World War II. Two of the three localities (Holmfossen and Nyrud) are sites of German war-time bridges across the Pasvik river; both blown up in 1944. The Tårnet locality is situated at a World War II German road to Pechenga.
A morphological analysis was carried out on specimens of R. thyrsiflorus from five regions; four representing ssp. thyrsiflorus (South Norway, Gulf of Finland, mainland of S Finland, Pasvik/Pechenga) and one of ssp. haematinus (Kola peninsula). Leaf character mean values for the latter were significantly different from those of the other four populations, which were internally similar. The morphological analysis supports the previous treatment of the indigenous occurrences of R. thyrsiflorus at the Kola peninsula as a separate subspecies.
