Viola suavis - new, yet old in the Norwegian flora.

This paper is a popular presentation of data from Marcussen & Nordal (1998) and previously unpublished data on Viola suavis M. Bieb. from France. The identity of a Viola population from SE Norway (Kragerø) is established by data from isoenzymes, morphometry and chromosome number, which points to V. suavis. The Norwegian name "fagerfiol" is proposed for V. suavis. The species, which was introduced to Norway more than 100 years ago, is fully naturalised today. It grows in close proximity to V. hirta and V. odorata without any signs of hybridisation, even though such hybrids are reported from Central Europe.
