Abstract: Nordic material of Nephroma helveticum is shown to belong in two species, provisionally named N. helveticum s. str. (ca. 20 localities in Finland, Norway, and Sweden) and N. tropicum (one locality in Norway). The species hypotheses are based on phylogenetic reconstruction of the ITS and mtSSU markers, terpenoid chemistry, and subtle morphological differences. Judging from terpenoid chemistry, both species also occur in Central Europe, and the application of the name N. helveticum is considered unsettled as it may actually belong to either of the two species. Nephroma sipeanum is regarded as a synonym of N. tropicum, and N. subhelveticum as a synonym of N. helveticum. Both species are extremely rare in the Nordic countries.
