The most widespread enzymes are invertase, amylase, catalase, urease, zymase (zymase complex), and lichenase. Lichens contain extra-cellular as well as intra-cellular enzymes. The presence of extra-cellular enzymes similar to those in certain fungi suggests an active influence of the lichen thallus on its substrate. The substrate may not only be a place of attachment but also an important source of nutrients, and the old but still current notion about the purely autotrophic nutrition of lichens does not agree with the facts. The distribution of enzymes in the thallus is related to the age of the tissue. In fruticose lichens, intra-cellular enzymes are more active in the upper part of the thallus, whereas extra-cellular enzymes are more active in the lower part of the thallus closer to the point of attachment to the substrate. There is a correlation between the content of lichen acids and the acitivity of intra-cellular enzymes: the higher the enzyme activity of a given part of the thallus, the greater the concentration of lichen acids there. The greatest concentration of lichen acids is in the uppermost or most actively growing part of the thallus. The studies leading to the above conclusionshave also contributed to practical industrial applications of lichen products for perfumes and antibiotics.]
