Abstract: 1 table. 2 plates. 12 figures. [Dark CO2 fixation is reported for the first time from lichens. "The pattern of incorporation into oxaloacetate, malate, citrate, alanine and asparatate points to fixation via PEP and provides both anaplerotic replenishment of TCA cycle intermediates as well as active amino acid and protein synthesis in the dark." Dark CO2 fixation rates vary with populations but appear adapted to the temperature and moisture conditions found in those microhabitats.]
