Abstract: 2 tables. 2 figures. [The lichens Stereocaulon paschale, Nephroma arcticum and Peltigera spp. are the most important nitrogen-fixing organisms in Lapland. The lichens account for an annual range of 0-384 mg N2/m2. However, laboratory experiments show that the nitrogenase enzyme is not adapted to low temperatures, a fact which may help to explain the higher stress of nitrogen dificiency in arctic systems than in temperate ones.
