Abstract: 2 figures. [From observations made in southern Sweden, especially in Goteborg, it appears that the fungus Athelia arachnoidea (Berk.) Jul. may be partially responsible for the "lichen deserts" found in many polluted cities. Since the fungus is favored by air pollution, the attack of the fungus might be regarded as a secondary biological effect of chemical pollution.]
