Abstract: 22 figures. [Revision of generic concepts in the family Physciaceae based on structure of the asci, structure of the spores and structure of the thallus. Recognized by the authors are 21 genera. "Four of them (Catolechia, Encephalographa, Epilichen, Orphniospora) probably do not belong to the Physciaceae, 3 of them (Buellia, Rinodina, Physcia) are still unnatural genera, the other ones seem to be natural." Keys are provided. New: Dermiscellum gen. nov., D. catawbense (Willey) Hafellner & Poelt, comb. nov.; Diploicia subcanescens (Werner) Hafellner & Poelt, comb. nov.; Hyperphyscia adglutinata (Floerke) Mayrhofer et Poelt, comb. nov., The following genera are recognized: Anaptychia, Buellia, Catolechia, Dermatiscum, Dermiscellum, Dimelaena, Diploicia, Dirinaria, Encephalographa, Epilichen, Heterodermia, Hyperphyscia, Orphniospora, Phaeorrhiza, Physcia, Physconia, Pyxine, Rinodina, Rinodinella, Santessonia and Tornabenia.]
