Abstract: 6 figures. ["In areas where pollution sources have existed for a number of years, distinct patterns reflecting differential sensitivity to the pollutants are apparent on the basis of species richness considerations. Thus sensitive species are excluded from areas with high air pollutant concentrations; these niches are then often filled by tolerant species. Finer resolution of the patterns may be obtained by quantitatively documenting the abundance and/or relative vitality of species. By employing this aproach together with modern multivariate analysis procedures it is possible to detect patterns developing in lichenized fungal populations in areas where air pollution has been present for a comparatively short time."]
