Polemochores in Sør-Varanger, Finnmark: Juncus compressus, Juncus conglomeratus and Juncus effusus.

Juncus compressus is reported from a site near Hesseng in Sør-Varanger, E Finnmark, at 69°41-42' N. This is the first record in North Norway; the species has also recently been found at a single site in the neighbouring Russian municipality of Pechenga. At Hesseng, J. compressus was found growing on an old gravel road leading to a blown-up German bunker. Carex ovalis, another rare species in North Norway (one previous record in Finnmark, also in Sør-Varanger), was recorded at the same site. Juncus conglomeratus is reported from a site W of Andrevann near Kirkenes, at 69°42' N. It was found close to the entrance of former German World War II ammunition barracks, blown up during the German retreat in October 1944. Four tufts with fruiting shoots were observed, growing on moist, disturbed soil. This is the first record in Finnmark, about 500 km E-NE of the northernmost site (Grytøya in southern Troms) of its continuous distribution along the Norwegian coast. Juncus effusus was found in a disturbed, somewhat moist site south of Kirkenes, at 69°41' N, close to the German World War II camp at Ternevann. This is the first record in Finnmark, 600 km E-NE of the former northern limit in the Lofoten islands, Nordland. All three Juncus species (and Carex ovalis) are interpreted as German polemochores, suggesting that they have been growing in the area for at least 55 years.
