Hunting for Leucorchis albida ssp. albida in the Sunnmøre
area, Møre og Romsdal county.
Leucorchis albida ssp. albida is considered a species mainly confined to the cultural landscape, viz. old style meadows and pastures, and displaying a marked decline following the changes in land use during the 20th century. During field work in connection with municipal recording of biological diversity in 1999 and 2000 the species was found at 29 new localities in the four municipalities of Herøy, Norddal, Stranda and Ålesund in the Sunnmøre district, Møre og Romsdal county, W Norway. Although these investigations support the general view that the species is rapidly declining in the cultural landscape, many of the finds were in other habitat types, in natural or semi-netural vegetation previously not regarded important for the species, such as screes, subalpine birch forests, sloping fens and alpine vegetation. A description of the species ecological amplitude in the area is given, with hints about promising habitats in which to search for it. This district apparently holds some of the richest occurences of this species in Norway.
