More about Buxbaumia viridis in Norway how much do we know about its
ecology and distribution?
25 new localities for Buxbaumia viridis are presented and its distribution in Norway is mapped and discussed. The species is reported from the counties of Vest-Agder and Sogn og Fjordane for the first time. The number of known localities has more than doubled within the last three years and we think this is due to low bryological activity in the past. The species occurs both on stumps and in young forest stands, and is probably less sensitive to forestry than other red-listed epixylic bryophytes. We assume that its preferrence for rich forest stands is a result of favorable humidity and greater availability of substrate in such stands. The results of plot investigations show that B. viridis is an infrequent species in most areas. However, an estimate based on frequency in randomly selected plots from one test parish, gives a very high number of expected occurrences for that parish. Frequency data obtained from systematic research and permanent plot investigations are necessary to evaluate supposed endangered species using IUCN categories.
