Juncus squarrosus: first record from Svalbard, and comments on the
species' ecology and distribution.
The suboceanic temperate-boreal species Juncus squarrosus has been recorded for the first time from Svalbard (Spitzbergen): Colesdalen, 78°06 N, in an area heavily grazed by reindeer. No detailed information is yet available about population size or the habitat. The observation is most unexpected, as the northern distribution limit until now lies appr. 10° further south, in the Lofoten islands of Northern Norway. The specimens are also extraordinary well-developed and mature, while the fruits mature late in Northern Norway.
