The German doctor and botanist, Fritz Schäfer, and a Herbarium vivum from Spitzbergen.

During the early part of the 20th century the two German brothers Fritz and the younger Hans Schäfer, both medical doctors, acted as plant collectors both in Europe and other continents. From 1919 to 1926 Fritz Schäfer stayed at Spitsbergen, at Kings Bay as the local doctor for the Kings Bay Kull Compani A/S. Herbarium specimens including gift sets from the arctic archipelago Spitsbergen collected by Schäfer are registered at several herbaria.
