Abstract

Galten, L. 2004. Nye funn av snøgras Phippsia R. BR. i Forollhogna nasjonalpark. Blyttia 62: 73-78.
New records of snow-grass Phippsia R. BR. in Forollhogna National Park.

The two snow-grass species Phippsia concinna and P. algida are difficult to separate. They differ significantly in relative morphological characters (Elven 1986, Elven & Elvebakk 1996, Steen 2000). Elven (1986) states that all populations of Phippsia in the Forollhogna, Sylan and Helagsfjällen mountains in Central Norway and adjacent Sweden are P. concinna. In 2002 one locality was rediscoved and four new found in Forollhogna National Park. In addition the first collection in this region of P. algida was made, on Mt Sandfjellet in the northwestern part of the Park. The two species, when growing in separate localities, were easy distinguishable. In September 2003 seven snowbeds in the eastern part of Mt Sandfjellet were investigated. Snow-grass was found at all of these. The collected plants were examined by Professor Reidar Elven at Botanical Museum, Oslo University. He identified all as Phippsia algida, apart from one single specimen of Phippsia concinna from one of the snowbeds. The species are much more difficult to distinguish when growing together. Figure 1 shows the distribution of the Phippsia spp. within Forollhogna National Park. Table 1 lists the species which most commonly grow together with Phippsia spp. The vegetation on the localities corresponds well with Fremstad’s (1997) Phippsia subtype of rich wet snowbed vegetation.
