Perenniporia subacida, a virgin forest species in Norway?
The red-listed wood-inhabiting fungus Perenniporia subacida is known from a total of 24 localities in Norway. 17 of these have been discovered during the last 5 years. The species is reported from 20 municipalities in 10 counties. In contrast to indications given by its Norwegian name (urskogskjuke), the fungus is not confined to the oldest, pristine or virgin forests. This is clearly demonstrated by large variation in the state of the forest between individual localities. However, the fungus seems to have its ecological optimum in old-growth forests. Based on data from the 24 localities and the red list criterias presented in IUCN (1994), it is suggested that P. subacida be considered under the category Endangered (EN) in Norway.
